The Menswear Accessory Every Woman Needs

Julia Roberts promoting on Colbert, Hailey Bieber having date night in LA, Joey King at the Met Gala... what do they all have in common? All three style icons were wearing neckties. Yes, the menswear accessory typically dedicated to suiting meant for boardrooms and formal events.

As someone who celebrates an actress in a suit on the red carpet and dedicated a series of Instagram stories to Quinn Hackett's wardrobe in The Studio (btw, you need to watch), you gotta know I am dying for the trend. I can't stop pinning ideas, drooling over fashion week street style looks, noticing celebrities wearing them, planning outfits for who-knows-when... but I'm going to make it happen. Did you see me learn how to tie a tie? Could be my new personality, truly.

Because the ways in which I've seen outfits styled with neckties vary so much, I wanted to round out the options for you in one spot. With such a versatile accessory, there are countless ways to utilize the trend. Whether it's a traditional look for the office or something funky for an evening (or day!) out, I think you'll be running to add one to your closet... just like me!

Here are four ways women can wear and style a necktie.

Traditional Knot

Nothing says "girlboss" quite like wearing a tie traditionally with a button up shirt just like the men. Personally, I'm a huge fan. I think it's a chic, preppy power move. It's easily adapted with denim, a leather belt and great shoes, or wear layered with blazers, trench coats or even opt for a v-neck sweater over top. If you have a formal office setting, put one on with a tailored skirt set to instantly transform the look. You can stick to classic, muted colors or have some fun mixing patterns.

Draping, Bows & More

Good news though, you don't have to stick to a traditional knot for an elevated necktie outfit. A few casual takes with the accessory would be draping it, scarf-like, around the neck with an open collar; tie it in a bow shape for a feminine look; wear it knotted around the neck (not the collar) for an undone version. There have been many instances I've seen them layered as well, which adds interest, but probably not comfort.

Through The Loops

Just like our favorite square silk scarves, neckties can be worn around the waist as belts. I absolutely love the idea of this with a simple tee and jeans for a pop of texture and color. Take them by surprise at the office with necktie belted trousers and a button up. Even tie them around your natural waist over a blazer or sweater dress for unexpected flair.

With Accessories

Speaking of flair... as we move back into a more maximalist era in fashion, don't shy away from accessorizing your accessory. Add a girly pearl necklace under the collar to pop over the printed tie. It's elegant and adds a feminine touch. Brooches alongside the tie on the lapel (or even on the tie) are an easy & eclectic add-on. Or simply add your favorite silver or gold chains to peek out from underneath the layers. It all adds interest and polishes the overall look.

Where To Buy Ties

Originally, neckties were an area of interest to stock for you in the store. But, I quickly learned that the world of ties is huge. Massive. The options absolutely endless. Once I started shopping around, I knew I'd rather source some favorites from trusted retailers who offer them at affordable prices. Below is a roundup from my LTK profile - feel free to click on it to shop all the neckties pictured. They are from the mens section because unless Free People or brands alike are offering styles, the mens section is where you go. It's all same same.

Two other very affordable places to shop them... thrift stores & your significant other's closet, if he has any! You can always raid dad's, too.

Based on how often I've noticed neckties on women in pop culture lately, I think this trend just gained traction. We're about to see more and more necktie styling out in the world and I'm all in... daring you to try it!
